Visual Analysis
Art works:Pontormo’s The Deposition (C.1528) and Rembrandt van Rijn’s Descent from The Cross (1634) https://www.wga.hu/html_m/p/pontormo/4capponi/1depos.html https://www.hermitagemuseum.org/wps/portal/hermitage/digital-collection/01.+Paintings/43510/ Using the Formal/Visual Analysis method, analyze your two assigned works and compare/contrast how each uses visual elements to represent a particular narrative. You may also bring in additional works discussed in lecture and your textbook to deepen your analysis, but your selected works must be the focus of this assignment. I encourage you to begin this process by pulling up the two images side by side and writing down what you notice about them right away, then move to a more structured analysis. Make sure you leave time to really study the works over a few different sittings, as this is not a research assignment, but an exercise in close looking, explaining what you see, and why/how it matters. For your paper, consider and explain: How does each artist interpret the narrative, and in what way does he/she present this story to the viewer? How has each artist used the qualities of the medium to create form, texture, and space? What is significant in the image? How does s/he direct the viewer to particular elements of the composition, and ultimately, an understanding of the image? How do the two works compare or contrast? In what ways are they visually similar, or different? Do these similarities or differences produce the same effect upon the viewer in both cases? If not, why is that significant? What might account for these shared or divergent features (consider where and when the works were produced)? Make sure you allow time to edit your work. When reading your drafts, ask yourself: Could someone who has not taken this course follow your argument, logic, and use of evidence? Is your point clear and compelling? Is your material well-organized and explained using clear and concise language? Please refer to “Paper-writing Tips”, “Formal Analysis Handout”, and “Chapman University’s Academic Integrity Policy” for additional guidance. Your final paper should be five pages in length, using 12-pt Times New Roman font, with one-inch margins.
