Students post- In the 1600-1700s, Roman Catholicism was the identity of churches in England. Puritans found it necessary to emigrate to America because Roman Catholicism believed in the forgiveness of sins, while Puritanism believed that sins should be met with punishment. Additionally, Puritans wanted to grow and develop within their own beliefs and emigration seemed to be the only way to create their own congregation. Although I did not see in the articles provided if Puritans lived up to Winthrop’s “A Model of Christian Charity”, I believe that majority did due to their strict beliefs. When analyzing Winthrop’s sermon, one might have been driven to conversion because his sermon was full of promises, and his diction was passionate. Winthrop’s sermon included bible verses that taught morals. However, Edward’s sermon opened the eyes of his followers because he revealed the punishments for sin with sharp diction. Edward’ sermon was important because he did not beat around the bush when discussing his beliefs. If Edward was not the last great Puritan, then he was definitely one of them, because he played a crucial role in the Great Awakening: a spiritual revival.
