1,500 words The Hook Everywhere there are obstacles, injustices, issues and inconveniences. Believing in good, trusting, and feeling hopeful are really hard to do. How can we overcome racism in our society? How can we overcome sexism in our society? How can we reduce the carbon footprint? How can we stop climate change? How can we overcome the problem of fake news? How can we protect our democracy and promote peace across the nation? The Writing Task Innovative, audacious people are changing the world for the better as I write this. (Really, I promise you. They are!) It is your job to find out who and how. You must use investigative powers to find one person who is currently working to make the world a better place. This person must be contemporary, public and research-able. Then, ask why this person. In your essay persuade TED Talks why your hero should be chosen to speak. All sources must be researched. The research you gather can be shared. Introduce your your essay by giving a context. Develop an insightful, focused thesis with 3-4 reasons. Acknowledge and respond to naysayers In the body, as you advance the reasoning stated in your thesis, follow PIE for each body paragraph. Use four – eight quotes from the provided sources. Work on introducing sources, summarizing, paraphrasing & quoting, and citing using MLA Style. “E” in PIE is most important–the “E” in PIE is when you analyze/explain/interpret what a quote means in your own words in relation to your writing purpose–why does it matter, what are the consequences. “What this means is…” is an alright phrase to use. Give yourself ample time revise for clearer content and structure. What is expected: Show a thoughtful response to the writing topic, by analyzing the source material and creating an organized and well-supported essay. Show the elements of an effective composition with an introduction, thesis, topic sentences, and conclusion. Lastly, please proofread for precise language, following the rules of grammar, punctuation, and usage, and aim for an academic style. To enhance sentence variety and fluency, use appositives, verbal phrases, and transitions to connect ideas.
