Inhalation of the asbestos fibers create inflammation and alveolitis. Macrophages that become activated release oxygen free radicals that develop cellular apoptosis which contributes to further fibrosis and malignancy. This condition ultimately leads to lung cancer, mesothelioma, or pleural plaques. The clinical manifestations of asbestosis include dyspnea upon exertion, nonproductive cough, inspiratory crackles, hypoxemia, and a decreased lung volume.Asbestosis is diagnosed through pulmonary function tests and confirmed with a CT scan. There is not a cure for asbestosis therefore the treatment plan is simply supportive care. This can include the use of bronchodilators, expectorants, supplemental oxygen, antibiotics, and pain medication. There are also alternative treatment options such as acupuncture, meditation, massage therapy, nutrition, herbal medicine, and homeopathic medicine.Educational needs for a patient newly diagnosed with asbestosis is that this is a progressive disorder that over a period of time will ultimately lead to death. Supportive care can slow the progression however there is not a cure. Patients should be encouraged to stop smoking or avoid triggers that cause shortness of breath. Family members should be included within the education of this particular disorder as conversations regarding end of life care should be scheduled to ensure the patients wishes are followed.Post 2As a nurse, I would categorize it as hypertension; however, there are other factors to consider such as nervousness- called the “white coat syndrome” meaning people get nervous when they see the white coat resulting in a high blood pressure reading. Other factors to consider are what the person ate or drank before the reading, smoke and alcohol, coffee or exercise 20minutes prior to the reading, the way the person is sitting, crossing the legs or using an inappropriate blood pressure cuff can also give a false reading.According to The American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Guideline for the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Management of High Blood Pressure in Adults 2017 Guideline:Normal systolic is less than 120 mm Hg and diastolic is less than 80 mm HgElevated systolic is 120–129 mm Hg and diastolic is less than 80 mm HgHigh blood pressure systolic is 130 mm Hg or higher and diastolic is 80 mm Hg or higherBased on the individual’s blood pressure, it falls under the high blood pressure guidelines. Moreover, home monitoring is an important way to confirm a high blood pressure. Make sure to use a validated device, and check that the cuff fits properly. Devices that measure from the wrist or finger are not recommended by the American Heart Association because they can provide unreliable results (Mayo Clinic, 2021.)
