Health Policy Development
The major project for this course is the development of an original health policy. This must be a new policy, not one that is already in place. It can be a policy at the federal, state, local or organizational level but it is strongly suggested that your policy not be at the federal level because, you are expected to actually present it (not necessarily as part of this class) to the appropriate elected official or the decision maker. Doing doing so at the federal level can be extremely challenging. It is not impossible but it is much easier and more realistic to develop and present a policy at the state, local or organizational level. In selecting a topic for your policy, consider your clinical issue or problem (PICO). However, it is not required that the policy you are to develop for this course be part of your PICO/Capstone. You are free to choose any clinical problem or health issue of interest to you as long as you present a good rationale for your choice. In a paper no more than one page in length, outline your proposed policy and the rationale for your choice. This paper should consist of three paragraphs: Policy statement Rationale for policy (the problem) Presentation plan (to whom you plan to present the policy). Helpful reminder: “A policy is the deliberate course of action chosen by an individual or group to deal with a problem” (Anderson, 2006, as cited in Mason, Leavitt & Chaffee, p.3).
