Education as Agent of Socialization
Study guide on education as an agent of socialisationLet’s start with with a review of the concept of agents of socialisation.View the video “Agents of socialization” from Khan Academy. While watching the video take note of how schools are considered agents of socialisation. Consider as well how the family can also be an agent of socialisation.Howick, J. (n.d.). Agents of socialization.[Online video]. Khan Academy. Retrieved from https://www.khanacademy.org/test-prep/mcat/behavior/social-psychology/v/agents-of-socialization.After watching the video consider how socialisation is viewed from a functionalist perspective of education. According to Ballantine, Hammack, and Stuber (2017), “In order to prosper, a society must train its members to be productive and to perform required roles—this, according to functionalist theory. However, there is disagreement on how, when, and for whom training should take place. Criticisms of the role of education in the process of socialization include a range of topics.”One issue is how much involvement should parents have in the education of their children. Parental education can range from the informal to the more structured home schooling. Informal parental involvement in education could be from very little to that so-called “helicopter parenting”. Compare it with our Asian neighbours. What values and habits do you think are emphasised by parents and schools? Would those values and habits differ by some factor such as social class? Finally let’s take a look at one issue of socialisation at an institutional level that Ballantine, Hammack, and Stuber (2017) had discussed: Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) or better known as day care.Read the following research article on Day Care in the Philippines.Abulon, E.L.R. (2010). Barangay day care centers: Emergence, current status and implications to teacher education. The Normal Lights: Journal on TeacherEducation, 5(1). Retrieved fromhttp://po.pnuresearchportal.org/ejournal/index.php/normallights/article/view/57.While reading the article, take note of the issues and problems of day care centres and day care workers. Are they similar to the issues of the barangay teacher a hundred years ago? After reading the article try to visit your local day care centre or if you are abroad a day care centre there. Informally interview the day care worker and ask about the centre’s function in socialising children. Then go to our discussion forum and share your findings.ReferencesAbulon, E.L.R. (2010).
