Conducting a Research

Annotated BibliographEach student will be required to select a topic of individual interest from the material covered in the text in anticipation of conducting research on the matter.  Upon selecting a topic, the student must then conduct library research to learn more about the matter from an academic perspective.  In addition to the information provided in the text, students must retrieve and examine a minimum of three peer-reviewed academic journal articles to develop an annotated bibliography.  Using the library, look for articles from social science journals (e.g., Sociological Inquiry) that have a “Short Title: Followed by a more descriptive title” that is about 20 pages long and presents methodology as the foundation for the article.  In other words, it is not an “opinion” piece from a magazine, but rather an empirically based essay base on research.  For each article, write one sentence on the general theme of the paper, one sentence that addresses your chosen issues more directly, how it serves to inform your topic, and a quote that you would cite in a paper. Tips on Creating and Formatting an Annotated Bibliography”An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.”-http://olinuris.library.cornell.edu/ref/research/skill28.htmAn annotated bibliography is usually a stepping-stone to a larger paper or presentation. It’s a summary, not a critical analysis, of any sources you think may be useful for your larger project. These sources include: academic articles, news articles, investigative news stories, government web pages and reports, textbooks, reliable podcasts and blogs, think tanks, and so forth. The goal of an annotated bib is to provide enough detail–including quotes and page #s–so that you can later cite the source without having to return to it. This is really a great tool: when writing a paper you can cite many academic articles, web pages, government reports and so forth without having to have them all piled on your desk or computer; rather, you just look back to your annotations and draw information from there.his means that while annotated bibs are an accurate summary of a source, you should emphasize information from the source that will help you in later projects. Therefore every entry needs to be informative and accurate so that you can refer back to it quickly and effectively. Some tips on how to make it useful include:Explain how this reference may be important for your larger project.Include specific info from the source–such as the author’s thesis and conclusions–not just vague comments, like “the article is about homelessness”.Define and explain all terms, acronyms, etc., as the author defines them.If it’s a research article, include the research method, sample, and findings.Give your quick appraisal of whether this is a good source and good research or if it has problems and weaknesses.Use proper grammar and coherent sentences so that you don’t misquote it in your paper. Some basics on formatting annotated bibs include;Start with the full citation of the source. In our course, this will be APA style.Include internet http links if that’s where you retrieved a source. If you are quoting the author, be sure you put it in quotation marks and include a page number (so that you can quote that same information in your paper).Alphabetize by authors’ last names.
