Welcome to the class!

I have several elements that I would like to take away from this course. First, I would like to learn how to communicate on a managerial level. I believe that in order to lead others, it is important to be able to demonstrate your own effective communication skills. Leading by example is what comes to mind. I don’t believe that I can expect others to communicate well if I am not able to do so.
Managers need to be able to communicate effectively for many reasons. I think that managers that can communicate with staff members effectively are more credible and trustworthy than others. This reminds me of a recent experience that I had within my own place of employment. Currently, I do not work on a managerial level. I recently switched places of employment. I had been in the company for about 3.5 years and was offered an opportunity that I could not refuse. I humbly wrote a formal letter of resignation letter and sent it to both my direct supervisor and human resources department. To this day, I never received any acknowledgment of this letter. There was no “sorry to see you go” or “is there anything that can be done to keep you with us” or even a “good luck”! Nothing! That being said, I feel as though I definitely made the right decision to make the change. To me, my manager needs a communication overhaul. So, I suppose that I would like to know how to handle that type of situation as well. What to say to an employee when they turn in their resignation letter.
Managers that communicate well are also normally better problem-solvers I would think. They seem to go hand in hand. When an employee is having a difficult time at the organization, I think that he or she will look towards the manager for strength and guidance. I believe that this is of great importance on that level also. I would like to be able to solve problems with ease and deal with conflict management as I know it will occur at some point in my career. I have always seen myself as somewhat of a mediator and problem solver. I am sure that it is a different world when trying to diffuse a conflict in the workplace rather than with family members.
