An Interpersonal Communication

Provide feedback (reply) to at least two of your fellow class members to continue the discussion for each chapter. Your initial posting should be should be at least one paragraph for each reply.this is the text: Wood, J. T. (2016). Interpersonal communication: Everyday encounters (8th ed.). Boston, MA: Cengage Learning. ISBN: 9781285445830CH. 4Q 4.1. What labels that you dislike have been applied to you or to groups to which you belong? Explain how the labels affect you. When our first impression of a person is guided by a stereotype, we tend to deduce things about the person in a selective or imprecise manner, thereby perpetuating our initial stereotype. It is a simple but maintained in a very intense way and that is not necessarily based on much direct experience. It can involve almost any distinctive aspect of a person – age, race, sex, profession, place of residence or group with which it is associated. There is a few labels that had been applied to me or my group of people: Latin// Hispanic. In the 1980 census, the word “Hispanic” applied to anyone born in Latin America or Spain, and to anyone who was descended from at least one person born in Latin America or Spain. “Hispanic” does not equate to a race. However, when placed alongside White and African-American on “form”, the racial and ethnic component of the denomination became evident.Xenophobia is the name we use in reference to the feeling of hostility and hatred expressed against people because they are foreigners.  This social prejudice has become more common due to the great flow of migrations that has happened; A large number of people from Mexico and other South/Central American nations move to the United States; Due to this great flow of migration, xenophobia may manifest itself in people who are afraid that, with the arrival of immigrants, the number of jobs will decrease or that violence will increase, etc.The image of Latinos and Mexicans in the United States has always been full of cliches and prejudices: lazy, unreliable, drunk, violent, liars. As a consequence it generates fear and insecurity.Q 4.2. To appreciate the importance of hypothetical thought, enabled by symbols, try to imagine living only in the present with no memories and no anticipations of the future; having no goals for yourself; and knowing only the concrete, immediate reality. How would not having hypothetical thought affect your life?I imagine that not having hypothetical thought would greatly alter my life, both in positive and negative ways. A blank slate without any memories or the ability to anticipate the future and look towards goals would result in significant setbacks in all aspects of life. Branching off what the textbook explains, without goals I would not have the motivation to move ahead in life and would generally be without anything to look forward to. There would be no opportunities to grow and learn without the capacity to reflect on ideas, as well as self-reflect. In addition to this, relationships of all levels and kinds would take on whole new meaning, as they would be lacking the intimacy and connection that history and future often contribute.Opposite of this, I could see some potential benefits to living only in the present. There is the possibility of being less wary in my approach to ideas, experiences, and people. Without memories of past negative encounters to influence my behavior and communication, I could be more curious and open when coming upon them. Maybe there would be less hesitation and fear present, but in exchange I would be ignorant or lacking knowledge and experience.Overall, I envision that my concept of self, work and school life, as well as social and romantic life would all be affected somewhat similarly, as they are all fundamentally formed around and sustained by hypothetical thought. Ultimately, it would be quite limiting, dull, and a bit sad to lead a life like such, and I think I would find myself at a standstill.CH.5Q 5.1. Consider the clothing you wear in different situations, such as in class, at work, attending a religious orspiritual ceremony, etc.  How does this affect the image that you present to others?  How does wearing different clothing affect how you feel about yourself?  Where did you learn how to dress for certain occasions?  Are there any implicit or explicit rules that regulate what types of clothes you wear?  Did you ever have conflict with your parents (caregivers) about your clothing and appearance when you were growing up?  Describe this conflict and explain why you think it occurred.I believe that clothing is an important of nonverbal communication as it gives the people you encounter a “first impression” that they can use to organize their perception of you. Different occasions have different clothing regulations that are usually adhered by, and to deviate from the norm leads to perception that you are different or abnormal. For example, wearing a t-shirt and sweatpants for an interview of a managerial position lets your employer think that you are unprofessional and irresponsible; and wearing bright, sequined clothes to a funeral lets others who are dressed in modest, black clothes to think that you are insensitive and inconsiderate for the deceased. Dressing right for occasions can definitely help communicate to others, your identity, as well as the purpose of your attendance. When I wear clothing that are outside of the intended occasion, I feel self-conscious and very out of place. I also oddly feel disrespectful towards the people who are wearing the “right” clothes. The main way I learned how to dress for certain occasions is through experience, as well as guidance from my parents. Sometimes, I also search on the internet for tips and images to reference to. Ultimately, I’ve learned how to dress myself by observing others who have been to said occasions, or have experienced said events. I believe that both implicit and explicit rules continuously exist that regulate what types of clothes I wear. Explicit rules of clothing regulation exist in the forms of dress codes from my workplace or the school, even guidance and critiques from my parents. Implicit rules of clothing regulation exist in the form of constant observation of the public, and “general rules” that many abide by. For example, it is implied that I must dress professionally for a job interview, and it is implied that a more casual style of clothing is acceptable among my peers on campus.Growing up in a predominantly-Muslim Asian country, modesty is a highly valued quality of the public. This mentality was brought over by my parents to the United States when my family immigrated here. My mother would criticize me and my sister for wearing shorts and skirts that are far above our knees, or for wearing only tank tops in public. Due to the valued modesty that my mother had grown up with in Indonesia, she thought that any articles of clothing that are revealing or short made me and my sister seem promiscuous, even though we use it for practicality as summers here can feel unbearable. Although, over time, my mother has grown to be more accepting of the types of clothing we wear and does not police me or my sister as much as before when we were younger.Q 5.3. Is it disrespectful to send or check text messages when you are in a face-to-face meeting or social interaction with others? Do the ethics of doing so vary depending on the people with whom you are interacting or the situation/setting? What are a few different messages that this kind of behavior could send to those with whom you are interacting? Explain your answer and use personal examples to support your views.I believe the disrespectfulness of checking your text messages depends on the situation. An importance aspect of social interactions is how attentive you appear to be; clearly, the person talking with you would be upset if it seemed like you are not paying any attention. It also varies on the people you are talking to. If it is a close friend and you glimpse at your cellphone quickly to check on a message if it vibrates, there likely won’t be too much issues unless it’s a very intimate heart-to-heart. However, doing that during a meeting or appointment sends a message that you don’t really want to be there. Speaking to an employer about a salary raise, then checking on your phone for an extended period of time, for example, is a good way to not only not get a raise, but also a means of making your employer think poorly of yourself.Consider the employer scenario once more, this time from the perspective of the employer instead of the employee. Your employee has called you for a question and having some spare time, you agree to meet them at your office. They discuss the question of receiving a raise. They are a hard worker, so you give it some thought, only to see him finagling about on his cell. It seems like they do not really care about getting a raise after all, you think, as they giving others the time of day right in front of you!Of course, this is the worst case scenario when it comes to communication skills. The employee should probably not peek at their cellphone while talking to their employer and if they really must, you could nod to the people you are talking to that it is urgent. The level of disrespect this imposes on whoever you are talking is dependent on how you handle the situation; it isn’t nearly as black and white as people hating on you for peeking at your phone and texting someone real quick.
